Interview with Joe, owner of MOGbroker, on May 15th, 1007:
How long have you been doing this? Did you start selling casually or has it always been a full time business? What gave you the idea to start this type of business? Did you use to be a gamer, maybe even a buyer or did is there some other story behind your entry into this market?
I have been involved with MMORPGs for about 8 years. I started in eq1 and moved to Eve-Online. I started by trying to sell my isk at Ebay and my local LAN gaming center. My addiction to this game turned into a huge investment. I managed to sell about 8 characters for 3k. I took that 3k and became an accounts manager at an older currency company that has gone Kaput www.ownyourgame.com . I made allot of cash buying and selling eve online characters. I left that company and started www.mogbroker.com and www.evecharacters.com .
Currently my joys are not in gaming (if time permits, you will see me in game). I am an E-Business enthusiast and will be working towards gaining more knowledge as it becomes available. This includes keeping up to date on the industry.
There is something about selling virtual currency and creating a viable income out of it. I enjoy running a business and creating a customer base which is not only global but very diversified from age to game. Included is the joy I get out of watching my Partners in china gain momentum in this business. They come from a very modest income and have achieved and made more money in a short period of time then most other Virtual currency employees. I am definitely interested in learning about other cultures and traditions as they pertain to business / advertising / marketing. The world is getting smaller and smaller. We will all get used to one another and what better time then right now.
Did you come across any strange customers or business deals? Can you share one of the more weird experiences as a currency seller?
I have not come across many very strange customers. The ones I did come across were drunken customers flirting with our customer service ladies. Let skip this question, nothing comes to mind.
How about the customers that aren’t just strange, but really fraudulent – how do you deal with those and is it a big problem?
Fraud is life for any virtual seller. Its how you deal with it, companies have there own strategies on dealing with fraud. Unfortunately there is no way of being protected from fraudulent attempts.
There are quite a few steps we take to prevent fraud or malicious activity against my company. We are located in the United States and have caught 3 fraudulent buyers who were actually prosecuted for many other fraudulent charges. We traced them down via some information they left behind and the national agency worked along side us and many other sites to catch these weak minded individuals. We are going to pass on getting too detailed on this subject.
Mogbroker seems to cover quite a few MMORPGs, but not World of Warcraft. Is there a specific reason for leaving out the biggest game on the market?
World of Warcraft is saturated with banning. There is allot of money to be made, but there is allot of money to be lost. Now blizzard is reversing currency out of customers accounts, in turn the companies are held liable.
[Update - June 1st, 2007] We now sell world of warcraft gold! As of May 15th!
How do you get along with other sellers like IGE or MOGS - is it brother in arms or a cut-throat free-for-all?
I don’t know [the people behind] Mogs or Ige. I don’t check IGE prices because they are just way over priced. Allot of other companies such as My Company Mogbroker is providing the currency at lower prices with same delivery times. IGE is like Microsoft in this industry and they are just raping every poor soul who is willing to pay 100% more for a product. They do have great customer service and allot of stock. Unfortunately most customers don’t realize we have suppliers who work with IGE and Mogbroker. They will sell there currency to the highest bidder and that is normally IGE. Unfortunately IGE tries to mandate prices on some occasions that suppliers don’t want to pay. For instance 100 gold bought by ige is 10$. Mogbroker will buy it at 12$ and sell it at 20 – Ige will buy this and sell it at 30$.
Mogs on the other hand is an American owned and operated company, im very proud of any companies who are owned by an American such as Mogbroker. I commend Mogs on there work and hope to keep a civil competitive edge over them. Hey my websites way better then Mogs, I put in allot of work to get it looking right for our customers, we have allot of great programmers and artists who are very gifted and fast.
Are you playing MMORPGs yourself? If so, what game do you play and for how much would you sell your main character :) ?
I used to play MMORPGs quite a bit . I have not played any MMORPGs like I used to. My business is very busy and I run a couple of other websites. Right now I play LOTRO and cant find the time to get past LVL 16. I am a guild leader and enjoy the game very much. Unfortunately id rather improve Mogbroker and provide a great service for all the gamers out on the wonderful www.
Everytime I see Eve Online I get somewhat lonely lol. My head shrinks and the world feels really big. I miss it and will always promote it anyway I can.
As a matter of fact I was speaking to some noobs who have never played Eve online and explaining the piracy, alliance wars and little wars in game. They were amazed but I could tell they still had no clue as to what scale I was speaking of.
